Volunteer

You can make a difference in the lives of others and become an active member in your community. Help to break the cycle of violence by volunteering as an advocate with Voices Against Violence.

Compassion, maturity, good listening skills, and a willingness to learn are the key attributes of an advocate answering the call when a victim of domestic or sexual violence, or stalking, reaches out for help. Volunteers are involved in many capacities within the agency and are provided with thorough training to prepare them for their chosen responsibilities.

Our comprehensive training program is required by law and qualifies advocates to work directly with victims/survivors. Sessions are offered twice a year, typically on weeknights and Saturdays. Continuing education is also available throughout the year.

Once trained, advocates support victims and families through:

Hotline Advocacy: Cover four shifts per month (day or evening) on our 24-hour Hotline. Advocates respond to calls and provide crisis intervention support and information to callers. A seasoned staff member is always available to volunteers while on the hotline.

In-Person Advocacy: As needed, advocates provide transportation, and support to victims/survivors residing in our emergency shelter.

Community Outreach: Volunteers have the opportunity to participate in events throughout the year that inform the public about our services.

Internships: Interns are required to complete our training and carry out a variety of tasks relative to their school requirements. Some responsibilities include: providing direct service, co-facilitating support group, and participating in the planning and implementation of outreach and awareness events.
